Ohya stone is wellknown as a special product of Utsunomiya Heiwakannon(Goddes of peace,27 meter-high huge statue),Ohyakannon(the oldest rockcarved Buddah in Japan), houses and streets in Ohya area are made of Ohya stone..
Above all, the huge underground space which used to be the mine is spectacular.

Ohya Stone

Ohya stone, a kind of green tuff, was formed by the volcanic eruption about 20 million years ago.
Ohya stone is quarried in the vicinity of Ohya around the northwestern parts of Utsunomiya. Its soft material makes it easy to process and durable. It is used for various facilities.

Heiwakannon-Goddess of Peace

This huge kannon is 27 meters high and was carved over the wall of the opening mine of ohya stone.
The statue was cut out with handiwork in commemoration of world peace from 1948 to 1954.
The top lookout of the stature commands the bird’s-eye view of Ohya district.

Ohya Stone Museum-extensive space under the ground

This museum exhibits the history of Ohya Stone .
This extensive space used to be a quarry under the ground and extends as large as 20,000 square meters.The deepest point is 60 meters and annual average temperature is 13 degrees Celsius.
The powerful and fantastic atomosphere is breathtaking.

Ohya-Kannon,Ohya Temple

Ohya Temple,wrapped up totally in the natural cave was built by the high priest Kobo-Daishi in 810.
The 4-meter-high thousand-armed kannon, carved on the surface of the huge cave, is famous as the oldest rock-carved Buddha in Japan.

Landscape Park-Keikan Park

The park commands the whole fantastic cliff view of Ohya stone. You will be refreshed with the murmur of the brook and breeze over the surface of the river.
Hordes of families visit around here to take a rest on the lawn.

Tage Fudohson(Temple)

The oldest temple prospered as the invocation temple for the Utsunomiya clans ruling here.
It is reputed to be Fudohson for preventing fire and wishing business prosperity.
The shops on the streets deal in skewers of taro and sculptures of frogs made out of Ohya stone.
